Android Instant Apps: Everything You Need to Know

  • The Instant Apps is compatible with Android Jelly Bean and later.
  • With Instant Apps, only the required app modules are downloaded.
  • Some of Google partners include BuzzFeed, Zumper, and Disney.
Google at I/O 2016 keynote made some major announcements and one of them was about the Android Instant Apps. The feature will allow users to open any app by just tapping on a link even if the app isn’t installed. It’s an expansion of the app streaming feature the company’s been working on.

During the keynote, Google stressed that it wanted to make possible for people to access a wider range of apps, seamlessly. “Today [Wednesday] we’re sharing a preview of a new project that we think will change how people experience Android apps. We call it Android Instant Apps, and it evolves Android apps to be able to run instantly, without requiring installation,” said Suresh Ganapathy, Product Manager.

The new feature basically lets users access apps from search, social media, messaging, and other deep links without the need to stop and first install the app. The company explained that the feature requires partner apps to be built with modules which will mean that user will access only the necessary modules when tapped on an app feature without downloading the entire app.

Google to make sure majority of Android users get access to the Instant Apps feature has made it compatible with Android Jelly Bean OS and later versions. Ganapathy claims this way the Android Instant Apps will reach over a billion users.

In a blog post, Ganapathy explains that developers will not be required to build a new and separate app for Google’s Instant Apps feature. “It’s the same Android APIs, the same project, the same source code. You’ll simply update your existing Android app to take advantage of Instant Apps functionality,” he adds.

The company confirmed that they are working with a small set of developers for the Instant Apps, and they will gradually expand the access soon.

As of now, Google worked with partners developers like BuzzFeed, B&H Photo, Medium, Hotel Tonight, Zumper and Disney. The Android Instant Apps will be available to users later this year.

Google has of course been working on app streaming features for a while now, and in November last year let users stream apps from search results.

LeEco has started sending out media invites for a June 8 event, where it is expected to launch the recently unveiled Le 2, Le 2 Pro, and Le Max 2 smartphones in India.

In April, LeEco launched the three smartphones in China, and is expected to soon make them available in the Indian market. The company touts the smartphones to be the first in the world to ditch the 3.5mm audio jack, in favour of a USB Type-C port.

The Le 2, Le 2 Pro and, Le Max 2 run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box with Emotion UI 5.6.01 skin on top. As for the price, the Indian availability and price will be known at the event. In China, the Le 2 was launched at CNY 1,099 (roughly Rs. 11,200); while the Le 2 Pro was launched at CNY 1,399 (roughly Rs. 14,300) for the Helio X20 variant, and CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 15,300) for the Helio X25 variant.

Beginning with the Le 2, the smartphone houses a 5.5-inch bezel-less HD display, a 2.3GHz deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 SoC paired with 3GB of RAM and Mali GPU. It sports 16-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel front camera, and 32GB of internal storage. It packs a 3000mAh battery, and supports LTE connectivity.

The Le 2 Pro bears visible bezel, a 21-megapixel rear camera, and offers options of a deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 SoC or a deca-core MediaTek Helio X25 processor. It also comes with 4GB RAM, and is integrated with the fast charging feature. All the other specifications are identical to the Le 2.

Lastly, the Le Max 2 offers a 5.7-inch QHD bezel-less display, 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, paired with 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM and Adreno 530 GPU. It comes with a 21-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel front camera, 64GB internal storage, 3100mAh battery and supports LTE connectivity.

HTC 10 India Launch Expected at Thursday Event!

  • HTC has sent out invites for an India launch event on Thursday.
  • HTC 10, or the HTC 10 Lifestyle, are widely expected to launch.
  • The Taiwanese company may launch other smartphones as well.
HTC has sent out media invites for an event in Delhi on Thursday, and it is widely expected that the company will launch its latest flagship smartphone, the HTC 10, in India.

The HTC 10 smartphone was announced globally in April and was powered by the Snapdragon 820 variant. However, the company listed another smartphone called HTC 10 Lifestyle in India, which came with a Snapdragon 652 SoC. This created quite some noise, however, the company later attempted to clarify that the ‘global variant’ will be headed to India – but it is still unclear what that means. It is no known whether HTC will be looking to launch the HTC 10 or HTC 10 Lifestyle variant in India, or both.

The HTC 10 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box, alongside 4GB of RAM (3GB on the HTC 10 Lifestyle). The smartphone features a 5.2-inch Quad HD (1440×2560 pixels) Super LCD 5 display with a pixel density of 564ppi. It is powered by a Snapdragon 820 SoC (Snapdragon 652 on the HTC 10 Lifestyle)
The smartphone sports a 12-UltraPixel laser autofocus camera with dual tone LED flash, BSI sensor, and optical image stabilisation (OIS).

The HTC 10 Lifestyle bears a sapphire lens for the rear camera in addition. There is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera as well featuring autofocus, BSI sensor, ptical image stabilisation (OIS), and auto selfie.

The HTC 10 comes in 32GB and 64GB (only 32GB available on HTC 10 Lifestyle) inbuilt storage options, expandable via microSD card (up to 2TB). It packs a 3000mAh battery, and includes Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, DLNA, 4G connectivity options. The HTC 10 comes in Glacier Silver, and Carbon Grey colour variants.

The Taiwanese manufacturer has launched several phones in the past few months that have not made their way to India, and it is possible the company may bring those in as well. The much awaited HTC Vive VR headset may once again be showcased.

Asus ZenFone 3 Series Design, Features Touted Ahead of May 30 Launch

  • Asus at its May 30 launch event will reveal three new devices.
  • ZenFone 3, ZenFone 3 Deluxe, and ZenFone 3 Max are expected to launch.
  • All three are expected to sport fingerprint scanner at the rear.

Asus had confirmed its ‘Zenvolution’ press event at the sidelines of Computex 2016 on May 31 where the company is expected to launch the new ZenFone 3 series of smartphones. Ahead of the official unveiling, Asus has teased the upcoming ZenFone 3 series in a teaser video confirming three handsets will launch including the Asus ZenFone 3, ZenFone 3 Deluxe, and ZenFone 3 Max.
The 34-seconds YoutUbe video shared by Asus shows three handsets – first with ‘Clarity’ tagline, second with ‘Desire’ tagline, and the third with ‘Unlimited.’ The official video tips some of the features of the upcoming ZenFone 3 series including a fingerprint scanner at the back, metal frames, and large screen size.
The YouTube video titled ‘Zenvolution is coming’ has a tagline says, “Get ready to redefine clarity, desirable detail, and unlimited viewing area.”
An earlier report citing Asus CEO Jerry Shen suggested that the upcoming ZenFone 3 smartphone series will launch in June and target the mid-range segment. Shen had added that 90 percent of the ZenFone 3 smartphones will have Qualcomm SoCs while 10 percent devices will pack MediaTek SoCs. He further claimed that the ZenFone 3 devices will be available in six countries in August.
Talking possibly about the Max variant of the ZenFone 3, Shen had revealed plans for a Max model under the ZenFone 3 range and added that the ZenFone 3 Max will account for nearly two-thirds of total ZenFone 3 shipments. Some of the other ZenFone 3 variants teased by Shen include the ZenFone 3 Deluxe and ZenFone 3. Talking about competition, Shen had claimed that Asus will compete with Huawei and Oppo in the Chinese market.

Acer Liquid X2 review

Liquid X2, Acer called it, when it clearly should have been the Acer Liquid X3. Now, we understand how the smartphone comes to replace the X1, but how did they miss out on a chance to name a triple-SIM device the X3, even if it skips a digit? Yes, the Acer Liquid X2 has multiple SIM slots, three of them.

Okay, to be fair, Acer already had one triple-SIM offering – the Liquid E700 – and it had the Trio moniker slapped to its name in some markets. Apparently, the company is no stranger to creative naming, it just chose to keep it simple for the Liquid X2.
Anyway, the number of SIM slots quickly reveals the price-conscious nature of the smartphone. Even if you had any doubts about it, the 720p resolution of the 5.5-inch display does well to squash them.
That said, the budget constraints have luckily not affected most of the other areas. The Mediatek MT6753 chipset is a reasonably powerful performer, there is a respectable 32GB of storage on board, and RAM is at a far-from-entry-level 3GB. There are also a couple of 13MP cams, one on the back, and one for selfies, and each gets an LED flash – not what you’d call skimping.
Powering the smartphone is a generous 4,020mAh battery (removable too), because what good are all these radios if they drill through your power pack in half a day of standby. A nicely balanced overall package, then.

Acer Liquid X2 key features

  • 5.5″ 720p IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 267ppi
  • Triple-SIM card support
  • All-plastic build, removable rear cover
  • Mediatek MT6753 chipset; octa-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A53 CPU, Mali-T720MP4 GPU, 3GB of RAM
  • 13MP autofocus rear camera, f/1.8 lens, single-LED flash; 1080p@30fps video recording
  • 13MP autofocus front camera, f/1.8 lens, single-LED flash; 1080p@30fps video recording
  • 32GB built-in storage, dedicated microSD slot
  • Android Lollipop 5.1
  • Cat. 4 LTE (150/50Mbps); Wi-Fi b/g/n; Bluetooth 4.0; GPS; microUSB, FM radio
  • 4,020mAh battery
  • Standard 3.5mm headphone jack, 24-bit/192kHz DAC, Dolby DTS HD certification

Main disadvantages

  • Not quite enough resolution for the screen real estate
  • Bulky for the screen size
  • Android 5.1 is somewhat dated
Looking at the above lists, users of multiple carriers or multiple numbers with the same carrier will find plenty to like about the Acer Liquid X2. Perhaps its biggest shortcoming is the low pixel density, but that’s understandable, it just needed to fit it into the budget. And just because we have twice the ppi in some flagships, doesn’t make the X2’s 267ppi all that terrible.
Of course, the above is based solely on the spec sheet, before we’ve even opened the box. That’s exactly what we’re going to do on the next page, where our usual routine begins.

OnePlus 3 Images Leak; Show Design Changes and USB Type-C Port

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • OnePlus 3’s front and bottom images have been leaked online.
    • The smartphone sports several design changes.
    • OnePlus is due to launch the smartphone in the second quarter.
Rumours surrounding the upcoming flagship OnePlus 3 have been doing the rounds for quite some time. And now, a new leak has surfaced giving us a better idea about how the new smartphone will look.
Twitter user The Malignant leaked two images of the OnePlus 3 showing us the front and bottom panels of the smartphone, revealing some a few design changes from the OnePlus 2. The front looks similar to the OnePlus 2, with no visible change. The OnePlus 2 home button stays, where the fingerprint scanner will most likely be embedded.

The rear portion of the device sports the speaker vents, the 3.5mm audio jack, and the USB Type-C port. The speaker holes are now exclusive only to the left side, unlike the OnePlus 2, which housed them on both sides of the USB Type-C port at the bottom. The headphone jack has also been shifted to the bottom of the device.

Though the tipster did warn the rear panel of the phone seen in the leaked photos does not feature a ‘retail shape’, and thus did not share the photo, we noticed is from the bottom panel that the rear of the OnePlus 3 sees a less pronounced curve as compared to its predecessor. While the OnePlus 2’s rear panel tapered towards its edges, these leaked shots indicate that the next smartphone may ditch this design. OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei had earlier suggested the One Plus 3 will come with a completely “new design”.

Earlier leaks point at two storage variants 32GB and 64GB. The 32GB storage variant will come with 4GB of RAM and will be priced at $308, while the 64GB variant will come with a 6GB RAM and will be priced at $385. There is also word of a 128GB model, but no information on the price tag of that variant has been revealed. The OnePlus 3 is expected to sport a 5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display and be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC.

The smartphone should run OxygenOS based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and previous leaks tip it should come with a 16-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel front camera, sport 32GB of inbuilt storage. The battery is pegged to be 3500mAh with the new “Dash Charge” feature, which is basically OnePlus’ name for fast charging technology. Pei has also announced that the OnePlus 3 will launchsometime in the second quarter of this year with a “better buying process”.

    Meizu m3 note First Impressions

    • The new Meizu m3 note includes an all-metal body.
    • The m3 note has been priced at Rs. 9,999 in India.
    • One of the biggest highlights of m3 note is it supports multi-window.

Chinese handset maker Meizu on Wednesday unveiled its new m3 note smartphone in India. At an event in New Delhi, Meizu showcased the new m-series smartphone which brings a host of improvements over its predecessor, the Meizu m2 note. Some of the improvements in the new Meizu m3 note include an all-metal body, a new fingerprint scanner, multi-window support, and a larger battery.

Leon Zhang, Marketing Head, Meizu India, also talked about how the brand has grown in India since its debut. The company claimed it now has over 100 service centres and also introduced a new WhatsApp service for Meizu users. At the event, we spent some time with the Meizu m3 note and here are our first impressions.

To start off, the Meizu m3 note doesn’t really look anything the company has launched before. Zhang noted that the m3 note was the first all-metal m-series smartphone. The device sports a unibody design and is made of 6000 series aluminium alloy. The front is dominated by the screen which sports 2.5D curved glass. There is a physical home button as well, with an embedded fingerprint scanner. You’ll also see a camera, earpiece, and sensors above the display.

The rear has antenna bands running along the top and bottom. The primary camera is placed in the centre and is accompanied by a dual-LED flash. The Meizu logo is embossed lower down. The power and volume buttons are on the right, while the left has the SIM card and microSD card slot. The 3.5mm audio jack is on top, while charging port and speakers are on the bottom.

Overall, the m3 note looks like a solid device and fits well in hand. The device definitely feels sturdier than the m2 note which was all plastic. Despite featuring a 5.5-inch screen, the m3 note was easy to use with just one hand. The physical home button was easy reachable with our thumb.

The m3 note features a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) LTPS screen with a pixel density of 403ppi. Zhang added that the screen has a high contrast ratio of 1000:1 and is bright at 450 nits. The handset is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 SoC (four 1.8GHz Cortex-A53 cores and four 1GHz Cortex-A53 cores, plus Mali-T860 graphics) which the company claimed offers 125 percent better graphics performance compared to the m2 note. The 4100mAh battery is one of the highlights of this device.

Meizu had launched two variants of the m3 note in China, one with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of inbuilt storage, and the other with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of inbuilt storage. The company has brought only the latter variant to India.

During our limited time with the handset, the Meizu m3 note handled multitasking and app switching pretty easily without any lag. For connectivity, the smartphone supports 4G on both SIMs. The company claims that the m3 note supports 6 modes and 18 frequency bands, including Indian LTE bands.

The physical home button on the m3 note smartphone also works as a back button, just like the one on the Meizu m2 note. The Marketing Head of Meizu India explained during his keynote that users have to tap the home button to go back, while pressing it will take them to the homescreen. Unfortunately, we couldn’t test the fingerprint sensor on the phone at the launch.

The Meizu m3 note runs Flyme 5 OS based on Android 5.1 Lollipop and the company touted that it brings several improvements over Flyme 4.5. Meizu said that power consumption has decreased by up to 32 percent on m3 note running Flyme 5 compared to the m2 note.

One of the biggest highlights of the Flyme 5 is multi-window support, which splits the screen in two halves and allows users to perform two functions simultaneously. On the m3 note, users will have to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access their recently opened apps, and the multi-window option appears on one of the app cards. The first half of the screen shows the app which was in use while the second half can be used for another app.

Some of the other enhancements that Flyme 5 brings are a revamped Gallery app which can now sort photos based on time or place; a new Wi-Fi doctor feature that can attempt to fix problems with connections, and new Quick Share feature that allows data to be transferred at 17Mbps through Wi-Fi. Some other features of Flyme 5 are an inbuilt storage cleaner, a RAM optimiser, and an anti-virus tool.

The company at the event also announced that the Flyme 5 will be rolling out to all Meizu smartphones launched in India this year.

The smartphone sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.2 aperture and phase-detection auto focus. It also features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for lens protection. There is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture as well. The images we took in artificial indoor lighting seemed vibrant with good color reproduction. Low light shots taken with the m3 note seemed above average. The front 5-megapixel camera also produced decent-looking samples. We will however reserve our verdict on the phone’s overall performance and camera quality till we get the chance to put it through our detailed review process.

    Final Thoughts
At Rs. 9,999, the Meizu m3 note definitely looks like a great package and will give tough competition to other competitors in the price segment including the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (2GB RAM model), LeEco Le 1s Eco, and the Coolpad Note 3 Plus.
